Pimple patches: what they do and when they help

What hydrocolloid pimple patches do, what the one small trial found, which pimples they suit, and why deep, painful acne needs something else.

Pimple patches are small, round stickers that go over a single pimple. Most are made of hydrocolloid, a material also used in wound dressings. Some also contain an acne ingredient. This guide covers what they do, what the research shows, which pimples they suit, and where they fall short. For the full acne plan, see how to get rid of acne.

What a pimple patch does

In a 2025 news release from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), dermatologist Fatima Fahs, MD, said pimple patches do have science behind them. She named two effects: they help draw out fluid from pimples, and they stop you from picking. She added that they won't work on deep acne.

The AAD's own steps for a deep, painful pimple include a patch. After using a warm compress to bring the pimple closer to the surface and applying an acne ingredient, the AAD says a hydrocolloid acne patch can be applied to protect the skin and improve healing.

What the research shows

The trial most often cited was small. In 2006, researchers in Taiwan ran a randomized, double-blind trial with 20 people who had mild to moderate acne. Ten used a hydrocolloid acne dressing and ten used plain skin tape. Both were applied every two days, for up to one week.

What was measuredResult
Overall acne severityFell more in the dressing group over three to seven days
Redness, oiliness and dark marksImproved more in the dressing group at days 3, 5 and 7
UVB light reaching the skin7.4 percent through the dressing, 38 percent through tape
Side effectsNo significant adverse events in either group

The authors called it a pilot study and said a larger study with longer follow-up was planned. Twenty people over one week is a small test. It supports patches as a gentle aid for inflamed surface pimples, and it says nothing about deep acne or long-term results. This guide found no larger trial in the medical sources it uses. The dressing tested was a commercial acne product, and its maker is named in the study abstract, so the result applies to that one dressing and may not hold for every patch on sale.

Which pimples patches suit

Patches fit a narrow set of spots:

  • A single red pimple or a spot with pus at the surface. This is the type the trial and the AAD describe.
  • A pimple you keep touching. Covering it removes the chance to pick. The AAD says picking, popping and squeezing make acne take longer to clear and raise the risk of scars and dark spots.
  • A healing spot you want to protect from fingers and friction.

Patches are a poor fit for:

  • Deep, painful lumps under the skin. The AAD says these are nodules or cysts, which often leave permanent scars and need a dermatologist.
  • Blackheads and whiteheads. These are clogged pores. The AAD recommends a retinoid such as adapalene for them.
  • Many pimples at once. That is acne that needs treatment over the whole area, every day.

Plain patches and medicated patches

A plain hydrocolloid patch has no active ingredient. A medicated patch adds one, often salicylic acid. The FDA says a product's intended use decides whether it is a cosmetic or a drug, and a patch sold to treat acne is a drug. It should list its active ingredient and strength in a Drug Facts box. Salicylic acid is allowed from 0.5 to 2 percent under the FDA's acne monograph.

A medicated patch carries the same warning as any acne product: irritation and dryness are more likely if you use another acne medicine on the skin at the same time. If you already use a treatment gel on the area, a plain patch over a dried gel is the gentler choice. Acne spot treatment explains how single-spot products fit with whole-face treatment.

Patches, sun and dark marks

One finding in the 2006 trial is easy to miss. The hydrocolloid dressing let 7.4 percent of UVB light through to the skin, against 38 percent for plain tape. The dressing group also had a larger drop in dark marks at days 3, 5 and 7.

That matters most on brown and black skin, where a pimple often leaves a dark mark behind. In a 2023 AAD release, a dermatologist said any inflammation in the skin, such as an acne bump, carries a risk of darkening, and that the risk is higher without sun protection. A patch covers one spot. The rest of the face still needs a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher that will not clog pores, as the AAD advises for anyone treating acne.

Tools for a single pimple, side by side

A patch is one of several things you can do for one spot. The AAD describes each of these:

ToolWhat it doesBest for
Warm, damp washclothHelps a deep pimple move closer to the surface so it can healA sore lump under the skin, before any product
IceReduces inflammation and painPainful spots, especially nodules and cysts
Thin layer of an acne ingredientAdapalene, azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid work better once the pimple is at the surfaceA pimple that has come up
Hydrocolloid patchProtects the skin and helps healing. Stops pickingA surface pimple you want to cover
Corticosteroid injection by a dermatologistFlattens most nodules and cysts within 48 to 72 hoursOne large, painful cyst or nodule

The home tools can be combined in the order above. The injection is for one or a few spots only, and only a doctor should give it.

Reading the label on a medicated patch

A patch that lists an active ingredient follows the FDA's acne rules. Look for:

  • The ingredient and strength. Salicylic acid must be 0.5 to 2 percent. Benzoyl peroxide, if used, must be 2.5 to 10 percent and carries a warning that it can bleach hair and dyed fabric.
  • The warning about other acne products. Every acne label must say that irritation and dryness are more likely when another topical acne medication is used at the same time.
  • Directions. The FDA allows an optional sensitivity test for a new user: use the product sparingly on one or two small areas during the first 3 days, and continue as directed if there is no discomfort.

A plain patch with no active ingredient has no Drug Facts box.

How to use a pimple patch

  1. Wash your face gently with a mild cleanser and your fingertips, and pat the skin dry.
  2. If the pimple is deep, use the AAD's warm compress first: a clean washcloth soaked in hot water, held on the spot for 10 to 15 minutes, three times a day.
  3. If you use an acne ingredient on the spot, apply a thin layer and let it dry.
  4. Press the patch over the pimple on dry skin.
  5. Change it on a schedule. In the 2006 trial, dressings were applied every two days.
  6. Stop if the skin under or around the patch turns red, itchy or sore.

Patches and Skinli's plan

Skinli's plan treats acne with two gels on the whole area at night, benzoyl peroxide 2.5 percent and adapalene 0.1 percent. A plain patch can sit on top of one pimple after the gels have soaked in, as a way to keep your hands off it. A medicated patch would add a third acne ingredient to that spot, which raises the chance of irritation.

When a patch is not enough

A patch covers one spot for a few days. The AAD says putting acne medicine only on blemishes fails to prevent new breakouts, and advises a thin layer over all acne-prone skin for 6 to 8 weeks.

The NHS says to see a GP if spots are deep, painful or causing scars, if you have signs of a skin infection such as hot, swollen and red skin, or if acne is affecting your mental health. See a dermatologist for deep, painful lumps, pimples that leave scars or dark marks, or acne that has not improved after a full course of treatment. For one large, painful spot, the AAD says a dermatologist can inject a corticosteroid, which flattens most nodules and cysts within 48 to 72 hours. How to get rid of pimples covers the other home steps for each type of spot.

Frequently asked questions

Do pimple patches work?

Pimple patches can help a surface pimple heal and stop you from picking it. Fatima Fahs, MD, a dermatologist quoted by the American Academy of Dermatology in 2025, said patches draw out fluid from pimples and stop picking, but they won't work on deep acne. In a 2006 trial of 20 people, a hydrocolloid dressing reduced acne severity more than plain skin tape over one week.

How do pimple patches work?

Pimple patches work by covering a pimple, which draws out fluid and stops fingers from picking at it, according to a dermatologist quoted by the American Academy of Dermatology in 2025. Most are made of hydrocolloid, a dressing material. In a 2006 pilot trial, a hydrocolloid acne dressing also let far less UVB light through to the skin than plain tape, 7.4 percent against 38 percent.

Are pimple patches hydrocolloid?

Many pimple patches are hydrocolloid, the dressing material the American Academy of Dermatology names when it says a hydrocolloid acne patch can protect the skin and improve healing. Some patches also contain an acne ingredient such as salicylic acid. A patch with an active ingredient is sold as an acne drug in the US and should list that ingredient and its strength in a Drug Facts box.

Are pimple patches good for cystic acne?

Pimple patches are a poor fit for cystic acne. A dermatologist quoted by the American Academy of Dermatology in 2025 said patches won't work on deep acne. The AAD says acne cysts and nodules often leave permanent scars and need a dermatologist, who can inject a single large cyst with a corticosteroid that flattens most within 48 to 72 hours.

Is pimple patches better than popping?

A pimple patch is a better choice than popping, because popping can push the contents of a pimple deeper and increase inflammation, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The AAD says popping can cause scars, more noticeable acne, pain and infection. A patch covers the pimple and stops you from picking it, which is one of the two benefits an AAD-quoted dermatologist named in 2025.

Do pimple patches work on blackheads?

Pimple patches are described by a dermatologist quoted by the American Academy of Dermatology as drawing fluid out of pimples. Blackheads are clogged pores. For blackheads, the AAD recommends a retinoid such as adapalene, sold without a prescription, and a benzoyl peroxide wash. It says to give treatment six to eight weeks and to consider a dermatologist if blackheads remain.

Do pimple patches heal acne faster?

Pimple patches may help a single pimple settle over a few days, but the evidence is small. In a 2006 randomized trial of 20 people with mild to moderate acne, a hydrocolloid dressing reduced acne severity and redness more than skin tape over three to seven days. The American Academy of Dermatology says a hydrocolloid patch can protect the skin and improve healing.

Are pimple patches bad for your skin?

Pimple patches caused no significant adverse events in the 2006 hydrocolloid acne dressing trial, which followed 20 people for one week. A patch that contains an acne ingredient such as salicylic acid can irritate the skin like any acne product. Stop using a patch if the skin under it turns red, itchy or sore, and see a doctor if it swells.

What pimple patches have salicylic acid?

Pimple patches with salicylic acid list it as the active ingredient in a Drug Facts box, because the FDA treats a product that claims to treat acne as a drug. The FDA's acne monograph allows salicylic acid from 0.5 to 2 percent. Skinli does not name brands. Check the Drug Facts box, and avoid using a medicated patch on top of another acne product on the same spot.

When should you put on a pimple patch?

Put a pimple patch on clean, dry skin over a pimple that has come to the surface. The American Academy of Dermatology's steps for a deep pimple start with a clean, warm, damp washcloth for 10 to 15 minutes, three times a day, to bring it closer to the surface. It then suggests an acne ingredient and a hydrocolloid patch to protect the spot.
