Can you get rid of a pimple overnight?
What one night can and cannot do for a pimple, the safe steps for tonight, why toothpaste and popping hurt, and the doctor treatment that works in days.

Part of the Acne treatment, which puts every step in order.
If you have a pimple tonight and somewhere to be tomorrow, start here. The honest answer is that no home treatment clears a pimple in one night. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says plainly that acne medication doesn't work overnight. One night can still make a spot calmer, flatter and harder to pick. This guide covers what to do tonight, what to avoid, and the one fast option that needs a doctor. The full plan for acne that keeps coming back is in how to get rid of acne.
What one night can and cannot do
| Goal | Possible tonight? | What the AAD says |
|---|---|---|
| Less pain and swelling | Yes, in part | Ice reduces inflammation, especially in nodules and cysts |
| Protect the spot from picking | Yes | A hydrocolloid patch can protect the skin and help it heal |
| Start treating a surface pimple | Yes | A thin layer of adapalene, azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid |
| Make the pimple disappear | No | Skin sometimes heals from a breakout in 7 to 10 days |
| Shrink a large, deep cyst fast | Only with a doctor | A corticosteroid injection flattens most within 48 to 72 hours |
Why a pimple takes days
A pimple starts well before you see it. The US National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) explains that oil, dead skin cells and hair stick together inside a pore and plug it. Bacteria that normally live on the skin then grow in the plugged pore and cause inflammation: swelling, redness, heat and pain. When the wall of the plugged pore breaks, its contents spill into the skin around it, and that is the pimple you see.
The body then has to clear that inflammation and repair the skin. The AAD says skin sometimes heals from a breakout in 7 to 10 days without leaving a sign. Treatment can support that healing over those days.
Tonight's steps for one pimple
- Wash gently. Use a mild cleanser and your fingertips, rinse with lukewarm water, and pat dry with a clean towel. The AAD says scrubbing irritates acne-prone skin.
- Ice a sore spot. The AAD says ice reduces inflammation in painful acne.
- Warm compress for a deep spot. If the pimple sits under the skin with no head, the AAD suggests a clean washcloth soaked in hot water, held on the spot for 10 to 15 minutes, three times a day, to bring it closer to the surface. A deep spot will need several days of this.
- Thin layer of one acne ingredient. For a pimple at the surface, use a small amount of benzoyl peroxide (the AAD advises starting at 2.5 percent) or salicylic acid. The AAD warns that using too much can irritate the skin even more.
- Patch it. A hydrocolloid patch over the dried product keeps fingers off it overnight. Pimple patches explains what the small studies show.
- Use a white pillowcase if you used benzoyl peroxide. The FDA requires its label to warn that it can bleach hair and dyed fabric.
If you already use an acne gel on your whole face, keep using it as normal and skip the extra spot product. The FDA requires every acne label to warn that irritation and dryness are more likely when you use another acne medicine at the same time. Acne spot treatment covers when a spot product makes sense.
What makes a pimple worse by morning
Popping it
The AAD explains that squeezing often pushes the contents of a pimple deeper into the skin. That increases inflammation and can lead to a more noticeable spot, pain and scars. Bacteria on your hands can cause an infection.
Toothpaste
Toothpaste is a common overnight trick. Two AAD dermatologists answered it directly. Julie Harper, MD, said to keep toothpaste for your teeth and use proven acne ingredients instead. Ramone Williams, MD, said toothpaste often contains abrasive ingredients like calcium or baking soda, whitening agents like peroxide, color and flavor. None of these fight acne, and they can irritate or harm the skin.
Drying it out
Rubbing alcohol, astringents and a thick layer of acne cream can all dry the skin. The AAD says dry skin is irritated skin, and irritated skin risks more acne.
Stacking products
A salicylic acid serum, a benzoyl peroxide cream and a retinol cream on the same spot add irritation, and the FDA label warning about using acne medicines together applies.
A big, painful pimple
A large, painful lump under the skin is usually a nodule or cyst. The AAD says these develop deep under the skin and that you may feel them more than see them. They cannot be cleared overnight at home, and squeezing one raises the risk of infection, discoloration and scarring, especially on darker skin.
A dermatologist can help within days. The AAD says a corticosteroid injection will flatten most acne nodules or cysts within 48 to 72 hours. This is for one especially painful spot, and only a doctor should give it. A dermatologist can also drain a large cyst with sterile tools. The AAD says you should never try to drain one at home, because the risk of infection is high. If an event is close, book the appointment a few days ahead.
A three-day plan before an event
If you have a few days' warning, you have more options than a single night allows.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| As soon as a large, painful lump appears | Call a dermatologist. The injection needs 48 to 72 hours to work |
| Each night | Gentle wash, ice for pain, a thin layer of one acne ingredient, a patch |
| For a deep spot, each day | Warm, damp washcloth for 10 to 15 minutes, three times a day |
| All three days | No new products. The AAD says trying a new treatment every few days can irritate the skin and cause breakouts |
| The morning of the event | Sunscreen, non-comedogenic makeup if you wear it, and hands off |
Darker skin and overnight care
On brown and black skin, how you treat a pimple tonight can decide whether a dark mark follows. The AAD says picking at or squeezing a deep pimple raises the risk of discoloration, especially on darker skin. In a 2023 AAD release, a dermatologist said any inflammation in the skin, such as an acne bump, carries a risk of darkening, and that the risk rises without sun protection. Leaving the spot alone, covering it with a patch and wearing sunscreen the next day all lower that risk.
When it is not a pimple
Some bumps that look like pimples are something else. The AAD says folliculitis, a skin infection of the hair follicles, and perioral dermatitis, which causes pimple-like spots around the mouth, can both be mistaken for acne. Acne products may not help them. The NHS says hot, swollen and red skin is a sign of skin infection and a reason to see a doctor.
The morning after
Keep the spot covered with a patch if you can, or leave it alone. If you wear makeup, the AAD advises products labeled non-comedogenic or won't clog pores, and says to remove makeup before bed with no exceptions. Makeup left on overnight can cause acne even when it is non-comedogenic. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher that will not clog pores, because some acne ingredients make skin more sensitive to sun.
Natural overnight options
Ice and a warm compress are the two non-medicine steps the AAD suggests. Tea tree oil is often recommended online. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says a small amount of research suggests it might help acne, and that more evidence is needed. The one trial in the 2015 Cochrane review of natural acne treatments lasted 45 days. How to get rid of acne naturally covers the evidence.
Stop the next overnight emergency
If pimples keep appearing before events, the fix is steady treatment. The AAD says the way to prevent new pimples is a thin layer of acne medicine over all acne-prone skin, every day, for 6 to 8 weeks. Skinli's plan builds that habit with two gels at night: benzoyl peroxide 2.5 percent and adapalene 0.1 percent on the whole area that gets pimples.
See a doctor if a spot is hot, swollen and spreading, which the NHS lists as a sign of skin infection, or if pimples are deep, painful or leaving scars.
Frequently asked questions
Can you get rid of a pimple overnight?
A pimple cannot be cleared in one night with any home treatment in the medical guidelines. The American Academy of Dermatology says acne medication does not work overnight, and that skin sometimes heals from a breakout in 7 to 10 days. One night can reduce swelling with ice and protect the spot with a patch. A dermatologist's steroid injection flattens most large cysts within 48 to 72 hours.
What to put on a pimple overnight?
Put a thin layer of an acne ingredient on a pimple overnight, such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, and cover it with a hydrocolloid patch if you like. The American Academy of Dermatology names adapalene, azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid for a pimple at the surface, and warns that using too much can irritate the skin. Wash and dry the skin first.
Does putting toothpaste on pimples overnight work?
Toothpaste does not treat pimples, overnight or at any time. American Academy of Dermatology dermatologist Ramone Williams, MD, says toothpaste often contains abrasive ingredients like calcium or baking soda, whitening agents like peroxide, color and flavor, and that none of these fight acne but they can irritate or harm your skin. Dermatologist Julie Harper, MD, says to keep toothpaste for your teeth.
Can you wear pimple patches overnight?
Pimple patches can be worn overnight on a clean, dry pimple, and the American Academy of Dermatology says a hydrocolloid acne patch can protect the skin and improve healing. A dermatologist quoted by the AAD in 2025 said patches stop you from picking. In a 2006 patch trial, dressings were applied every two days.
How to get rid of the redness of a pimple overnight?
Redness and swelling in a pimple can be reduced overnight with ice, which the American Academy of Dermatology says reduces inflammation, especially in painful nodules and cysts. Avoid scrubbing or drying agents such as rubbing alcohol, because the AAD says irritated skin risks more acne.
How to get rid of a pimple under the skin overnight?
A pimple under the skin usually takes longer than one night. The American Academy of Dermatology advises holding a clean, warm, damp washcloth on it for 10 to 15 minutes, three times a day, to help it move closer to the surface so it can heal. Once it surfaces, a thin layer of an acne ingredient works better. Never squeeze a deep pimple.
How to get rid of a pimple overnight without popping it?
Treat a pimple overnight without popping it by washing gently, applying a thin layer of benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, and covering it with a hydrocolloid patch so you cannot pick it. The American Academy of Dermatology says popping pushes the contents deeper into the skin, which increases inflammation and can cause scars, more noticeable acne, pain and infection.
How to get rid of a big pimple overnight?
A big, painful pimple needs more than one night. Ice reduces inflammation and a warm, damp washcloth helps it rise, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. For one large, painful cyst or nodule, a dermatologist can inject a corticosteroid, and the AAD says this flattens most within 48 to 72 hours. Only a doctor should give this injection, and you should never drain a cyst at home.
How to get rid of a pimple overnight naturally?
Ice and a warm compress are the non-medicine steps the American Academy of Dermatology suggests for a painful pimple: ice to reduce inflammation, and a clean, warm, damp washcloth for 10 to 15 minutes to bring a deep pimple to the surface. Tea tree oil has only a small amount of research behind it for acne, says the US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.
Can I put benzoyl peroxide on a pimple overnight?
Benzoyl peroxide can be left on a pimple overnight as a thin layer, and the American Academy of Dermatology names it among the ingredients for a pimple at the surface. The FDA requires its label to warn that it can bleach hair and dyed fabric, so use a white pillowcase or let it dry fully. Start with 2.5 percent, which the AAD advises for fewer side effects.
