Whiteheads on your nose: causes and treatment

Small white bumps on the nose have more than one cause. Some are whiteheads, pores plugged with oil and dead skin under a closed top. Some are milia, tiny pockets of trapped skin that are a different condition. Some are the normal oil plugs called sebaceous filaments, which look white only after they are pressed out. Each one needs different care, so the first step is to work out which you have. This guide shows how, then explains what clears whiteheads on the nose. Whiteheads

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says a whitehead "forms when excess oil and dead skin cells build up and plug the opening of a pore. This causes a blemish that is raised and white or flesh colored." The FDA's rules for acne products describe a whitehead as "a small, firm, whitish elevation of the skin." Milia

MedlinePlus says "Milia are tiny white bumps or small cysts on the skin" that form "when dead skin becomes trapped in small pockets at the surface of the skin." In newborns they appear "across the cheeks, nose, and chin." MedlinePlus adds that "Adults may develop milia on the face" and that milia are not a true form of acne.

Sebaceous filaments

Sebaceous filaments are oil plugs that line the pores on the sides of the nose. A 1976 study in Archives of Dermatological Research called them "cylindrical tubes of whitish-yellowish color" that can be pressed out of oily areas of the face. It found them most often on the center of the face and the sides of the nose in people past puberty. Pressed out, they look like whitish-yellow strands, which people can mistake for whiteheads. Pustules

The AAD says pustules "contain a yellowish fluid" and often have "a yellow- or white-colored center." They sit on red, swollen skin, and they are pimples. The guide pimple on nose covers red spots on the nose.

Why whiteheads form on the nose

Whiteheads on the nose form the same way as whiteheads anywhere: oil and dead skin cells plug a pore and skin closes over the top. A 2025 study of nose blackheads in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology named "excessive sebum production" as a main driver of clogged pores on the nose. Sebum is the skin's natural oil.

What you put on your nose can add to it. The AAD calls acne caused by products acne cosmetica. It says that with makeup, many women get small raised whiteheads on the cheeks, chin or forehead, and that blemishes can take "anywhere from a few days to 6 months" to appear. Sunscreen, foundation, concealer and moisturizer all sit on the nose, so each one should carry a non-comedogenic label. MedlinePlus also lists heavy sweating, humidity, and touching or rubbing the skin as acne triggers.

How to treat whiteheads on the nose

The AAD gives one plan for blackheads and whiteheads: "To unclog pores, dermatologists recommend using a retinoid. You can buy one retinoid, adapalene, without a prescription. You'll also want to use a benzoyl peroxide wash." It says to "Give treatment six to eight weeks to work."

1. Wash gently, twice a day. Use a mild cleanser and your fingertips.
2. Apply a thin layer of adapalene 0.1 percent once a day. The label says to "cover the entire affected area with a thin layer." Cover the whole nose and the skin beside it. Keep it away from the eyes, lips and mouth, and out of the nostrils.
3. Start slowly. Skinli's photo plan starts adapalene every other night for two weeks. The label says acne "may appear to worsen before it improves" in the early weeks.
4. Add a benzoyl peroxide wash if you also get pimples. The FDA allows 2.5 to 10 percent, and the AAD suggests starting at 2.5 percent.
5. Moisturize and use sunscreen. The label says a moisturizer "may help decrease dryness," and to use sunscreen outdoors.

Salicylic acid is the other choice without a prescription. The AAD says it "works best on whiteheads and blackheads." Use one pore-clearing product at a time, because the adapalene label says irritation is more likely with more than one acne medicine. Makeup and the nose

Makeup is fine with whiteheads if you choose it with care. The AAD's makeup page says it is okay for people with acne to wear makeup, and gives these tips:

• Choose products that say "Oil-free, won't clog pores, or non-comedogenic."
• If you use acne medicine, "apply the acne medication first," then makeup.
• Remove all makeup before bed with an oil-free remover, then wash with a gentle cleanser.
• Clean makeup brushes every week, and do not share them. The AAD says bacteria, dead skin cells and oil from other people's skin can stick to shared makeup and tools.

If whiteheads on your nose started after a new foundation, concealer or sunscreen, stop that product first. The AAD says acne cosmetica "will often clear when you stop using the makeup and hair and skin care products that clog your pores."

What to avoid on the nose

• Picking. The AAD says "Picking at whiteheads can lead to more whiteheads and acne scars." Its skin care habits page says squeezing pushes material "deeper into your skin," which increases inflammation.

• Strips and peel-off masks. The 2025 study lists squeezing the nose and peel-off masks as home methods that can cause "skin infections, further pore dilation, and capillary damage." The guide pore strips for blackheads explains what strips remove.
• Scrubbing and hot water. The AAD says scrubbing "can irritate your skin, causing acne to flare," and that hot water irritates the skin.

Milia need a different approach

Milia are pockets of trapped skin, so they need a different plan from whiteheads. MedlinePlus says that in newborns they go away without treatment, and that "Adults may have milia removed to improve their appearance." Keep them from coming back

Whiteheads on the nose can return after they clear. The AAD says blackheads and whiteheads "can return, so you'll need to follow a skin-care plan to prevent new blemishes." It also says dermatologists may recommend a topical retinoid "as a maintenance treatment" to keep skin clear once acne is under control. Keep washing twice a day, keep your products non-comedogenic, and keep using the treatment that cleared your skin.

When to see a doctor

See a dermatologist if whiteheads on your nose have not improved after six to eight weeks of daily treatment, if you are not sure what the bumps are, or if the bumps are hard and never change. See a doctor sooner for a lump that is red, sore or swelling. The NHS says to ask for an urgent appointment for "a sore or red lump on your skin." MedlinePlus says to call your provider if an epidermoid cyst "becomes red or painful," and the NHS says: "Do not squeeze a skin cyst."
