How to get rid of acne fast: realistic timelines

Everyone with acne wants it gone quickly. The honest answer is that acne treatment works over weeks, and the fastest plan is the one you can keep up every day. This guide sets out how long each treatment takes, the steps that help it work as soon as it can, the habits that slow clearing down, and the few doctor treatments that act within days. How long acne treatment takes

The AAD lists three goals for acne treatment: clear the acne you have, stop new breakouts, and prevent scars. One spot can heal on its own, and the AAD says skin sometimes heals from a breakout in 7 to 10 days. Stopping new breakouts is the slow part. The AAD puts it plainly: acne medication doesn't work overnight.

Steps that help treatment work as soon as it can

Pick an ingredient with strong evidence

Treat the whole area, every day

The AAD says to spread a thin layer of acne medicine over all acne-prone skin, including skin that looks clear. That treats the acne you have and prevents the next breakout. Skinli's plan builds up to every night by week 3 for this reason.

Keep the skin comfortable enough to continue

The AAD says a daily moisturizer can help skin tolerate acne medicine. NICE advises starting benzoyl peroxide and retinoids every other day, or washing them off after an hour, and moving to normal use once the skin copes.

Add a second product at the right time

Acne has several causes: oil, clogged pores, bacteria and inflammation. The AAD's advice when one product has not helped after 4 to 6 weeks is to add a second acne product that works on a different cause. If you use benzoyl peroxide, the second would be a retinoid such as adapalene, or salicylic acid. The FDA warns that using two acne medicines at once makes irritation and dryness more likely, so add the second one slowly.

Habits that slow clearing down

Some habits feel fast and make acne last longer.

• Switching products often. The AAD says trying a new acne treatment every week or so can irritate the skin and cause breakouts. Using a new product every few days can worsen acne.
• Using more, or stronger. The adapalene label says applying more than directed will not give faster or better results but may worsen irritation. The AAD advises starting benzoyl peroxide at 2.5 percent, although products go up to 10 percent.
• Drying the skin out. The AAD says dry skin is irritated skin, and irritated skin risks more acne. It advises against astringents and rubbing alcohol.
• Scrubbing. The AAD says scrubbing irritates acne-prone skin and makes acne flare.
• Popping. The AAD says picking and popping make acne take longer to clear and raise the risk of scars and dark spots.
• Home remedies from social media. AAD dermatologists say toothpaste contains nothing that fights acne and can irritate or harm the skin.

What a dermatologist can do quickly

A few treatments work within days, and all of them are done by a doctor.

• Steroid injection for one big spot. A dermatologist can inject a corticosteroid into a large, painful cyst or nodule. The AAD says this will flatten most within 48 to 72 hours. It is for one or a few spots only, because too much corticosteroid causes side effects.
• Drainage. A dermatologist can open and drain a large, painful cyst with sterile tools. The AAD says you should never try to drain one at home, because the risk of infection is high.
• Extraction. A dermatologist can remove blackheads and whiteheads that have not cleared with treatment.

For acne across the face, prescription treatment still takes weeks. The AAD says severe acne can take two to three months to improve, and a course of isotretinoin, the pill for severe acne, takes four to five months. Why the first weeks can look slower than expected

Some treatments make acne look worse before it looks better. The adapalene Drug Facts label says acne may appear to worsen during the early weeks of use, calls this normal, and says to keep using it as directed unless irritation becomes severe. Before a big event

If an important day is close, the aim changes from clearing acne to not making it worse.

• Do not start a new strong product a few days before. The AAD says a new product every few days can irritate the skin and cause breakouts, so the days before an event are the worst time to try one.

Keep going once it clears

The AAD says that even when you see clearing, you should keep using the acne treatment to help prevent new breakouts. For severe acne, it says that without continued treatment acne can return quickly. When fast matters most

Some acne should reach a doctor quickly. The AAD says large, painful pimples deep in the skin, and acne that leaves scars, need a dermatologist, because store products are unlikely to treat them. NICE says scarring risk rises with how severe acne is and how long it lasts. The NHS adds signs of skin infection, such as hot, swollen, red skin, and acne that affects your mental health.
